Welcome to the University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf

The University of Applied Sciences in Düsseldorf, Germany (Fachhochschule Düsseldorf: FH D) was founded on 1 August 1971 by combining several renowned institutions in the area. FH D started lectures with 120 professors and around 2,200 students under the leadership of the founding rector, Professor Hans Albert Klüfer.
Today, the University is one of the largest of its kind in the German Federal State of North Rhine Westphalia and offers a comprehensive and interdisciplinary range of subjects. Approximately 7,500 students are taught in 34 degree programmes in 7 faculties/departments by nearly 160 professors and around 100 assistant staff.

Our practical and interdisciplinary approach distinguishes us. We guarantee teaching is linked to practical experience as our lecturers have years of experience in commerce, industry and research and practical courses are indeed an integral component of our study programmes. We have contact with companies and institutions that offer internships and part-time jobs in Germany and abroad, particularly in engineering, social and cultural sciences and business. Mentors supervise students before, during and after internships.

The University cooperates closely with schools in the region in order to facilitate the step from school to university. We have information events at schools, supervise course work and assist in selecting degree subjects by offering advice, producing brochures, exhibiting at various school fairs and having a University Open Day.

The agreements made between the University and the State of North Rhine Westphalia in March 2005 are the fundamental basis of the University’s policy and philosophy in 2010. The agreements stipulate that FH D concentrates more strongly on certain areas: We offer networked teaching and research in the interdisciplinary areas of design, technology, the social sector and business cross-sectioned with media, communication and IT. Emphasis is on architecture, design, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, process engineering, media, social and cultural sciences and business. All degrees are now Bachelor or Master degrees. This enables our degrees to be compared internationally and our students to be more mobile whilst guaranteeing a shorter time of study with the opportunity to complete a degree in just six semesters.

The University has 75 European and 25 international university agreements and actively promotes the international exchange of students and lecturers by participating in congresses and summer schools. We advise and organise study and internships abroad as well as communicate and offer many other opportunities for advancement.
